whats your coolest purchase that was purely out of want and not need

I'll drop money when it comes to be able to using my body while it's young. Be it hiking in Nepal or skiing 3 weeks straight per year those things are often expensive and and would be a luxery for most but I won't hesitate too much on those things within reason.

For me, wealth being the sum of all the parts, my splurge threshold would be cars and house all solid and maintained for next 5 years and have full 6 months emergency contingency fund. Then I spurge a little bit, but my tastes are not too expensive at this point and time extremely limited from kids. So not much margin to splurge unfortunately. Hoping to get back to the boat hobby in a few years, that's my splurge. Way cheaper when you can avoid the marina fees, have a trailer setup.


For example last splurge was a gaming rig. But have only bought one new game cause not much time and already backlog of unplayed games from sale deals...

Before kids, bought a big blue water boat, did that for a couple years until kids broke the budget

I really don't have a limitation on how I splurge on myself.
Guess it is really having a true limit on how I spend my money and don't spend needless or wild.
Having no real expenses other than household bills, there is nothing.

Believe not having kids is another factor as to why I guess there isn't a issue with myself doing that.

Last week I spent $40 and bought a few pounds of some fancy smoked bacon, and didn't spend anything else because I knew it was fancy and was out of my normal spending habits.

That's not quite how it works.

It is not necessarily an amount. The test is to see if your money generation process works well. If the beta test works and you know you can replicate the results= "You might splurge at first..."

However your mentality then changes completely, and you want to secretly be seen as bring "normal" or even "poor" - so you do not stand out from the crowd/and are not targetted for your wealth/intelligence/ideas.

In my experience the middle class fakers flash their wealth and buy designer labels or ferrari's to "flaunt it".

The genuine elite are literally "discreet". If they do wear expensive/tailored clothes - their labels *(which you have probably never heard of) do not show - and their clothes/cars are not necessarily the loudest. They develop their minds= skills, education, cultural knowledge, travel, etc - and can actually look quite normal on the outside in terms of appearance.

When you finally make enough money to spluge you don't do it. You wind up paying off some debt or doing somthing smart with your money. it's the reason you got so much in the first place.

Their spluge would be to buy something for their business, pay off good debt, buy another business or something that makes them more money.

Knowledge about money is key.

Some might make a few mistakes at first - i.e. buying some very expensive clothes/toys - but you get bored quickly and after you just want to "blend in" with the rest of society and not look rich at all.

What do you end up doing with the rest of the money? Look after your physical health (gym, healthy eating planned by a nutritionist). Develop your mind with extra formal education/practical skills [Phd/Postdoc(s) @ Harv/Yale/Princeton, MIT, Caltech NASA JPL, John's Hopkins Med, Wharton Biz, Ox/Cam]. You become addicted to learning more and trying to understand how the world works. Shed fiction completely.

Then put the cash to work and make even more...faster.
