Im sure this is different for everyone but id like to hear people's thoughts on the threshold of wealth they'd want to reach before they splurge on themselves.

It's the little items I find I am far less tight on.

I still consider every large purchase for a lengthy amount of time, weighing out actual future use, impact on future value of investments, etc. So guess I'm not at the wealth level of just splurging.

But I have noticed attitude twords what I'd call daily items shift. Want it from the grocery store, whatever just grab it. Few hundred dollar item that you don't really need, go for it.

I don't know if I'll ever hit the wealth of splurging. Currently in excess of 3m, 2.9 liquid.

I suspect upbringing matters and I was not brought up in an environment where splurging was ever on the table. I had never been on a vacation or outside my own province with the exception of a school trip to PEI lmao until I was an adult working.

Whats a splurge? Another house or another packet of ramen?

If you can afford to live for 12 months without worry you can splurge.

Ever since I burned money on a roomba I couldn't be bothered to maintain ive stopped on anything north of $100 unless i have a reason. Im surprised at 2.9 liquid youre hesitant to splurge. You could effectively retire on that in canada.

Toys, gadgets, experiences, material things etc. Whatever floats your boat.

I dont want for much but do have some ludicrously expensive things (cars) I want to get but dont want wait till my 60s to get them when your body can't handle it anymore

Perhaps when I think splurging I think differently than you. Splurging for myself does not include things I use a lot during the year but still may be higher in cost. I have 2x skidoos 4x ATVs and a boat. But I use everything a lot. Thousands if not tens of thousands of km's per year cumulatively on those or whatever that equates to hour wise.

I'm not going to not spend a limit my enjoyment from something that I do all the time just to have a higher future value in my account.

But I won't buy a sports car because I'm not going to use. Or a nice watch or something because I don't care about vanity. But when it comes to hobbies I do year round that I spend most of my free time doing I won't hold back. I'll still buy sensabily though. A 20foot welded aluminum boat will run you on the 120k or more in Canada, but I choose to buy a used bathtub that I could fix myself for 20k and it takes me everywhere everyone else goes. And I would bet I get more use than anyone here with their 200k boats. I have no fears of beating things up and so it gets used.

Boats scare me, but its nice to hear its working out for you. The cost to keep those things around is prohibitive. Id rather rent one or book passage on one than deal with the maintenance overhead.

Cars i drive every day and I have a goal of getting a new 911 turbo s by 45

I don't quite understand where the high cost narrative comes from for boats. Aside from the amount of gas they burn, which is a ton by comparison to other recreational vehicles. Perhaps people who can't do the maintenance themselves or wont. I run mine in the Arctic Ocean so yes we have less salinity but just basic maintenance keeps a good 4 stroke running in proper order and then if you just run the basics of electronics, radio, bilge pump, gps and a phone charger like I do, its just basic crimp and shrink-wrap wiring that a monkey can take care of.

But I use it every weekend and took off multiple weeks last year in August and stayed out on the land for a few weeks straight. The beauty that can be accessed cant be understated where I am at. Cant say or i'd give myself away. With that level of use, I don't consider it a splurge, if I bought some 2025 Kingfisher or Thunderjet with a hardtop for 125-200K yeah that's splurging. But it would do the same thing my 20K boat does in the same safe manner (same length and width slightly different draft).

if you think of spending relative to networth.

if you are worth 4 mill. 10% of your worth is 400k. to an normal upper middle class person, thats a pretty decent splurge amount.

if it were me? id take a year and travel the world.

You know, you may think that way until you actually get there. Problem is when you get there, you probably have kids by then. You probably also see the future current graduates , new homeowners, etc. are faced with and think, great now I need to save 120K for each kid for down payments. 30K + for each for education (Canada). And well traveling the world with 2 kids, can be done if they're in school you will start to think, is that fair to them? They have good friends.

The timing of when you accumulate that is usually not your 20s.

Here's a wild statistic for you, average gift to kid is 115K for a downpayment now.

And while I was able to go through life with zero dollars provided and I always was adamaent I would never give my kid any either, future is looking bleaker and bleaker and my arugment as to why I would not is starting to go to shambles.

i hear you for sure on that, thats a true perspective - i just have a newborn right now so that perspective re; school is not there. i have 200k set aside for him regardless but will probably need more.

thats amazing you were able to not use help but things are definitely changing fast and our youth are being displaced - the only way to curb this mass immigration and other crap is to educate and help our youth. they are our future.
