The server/hosting realm barely eats up 1% of todays computer resource power
(compared to early 2000-2001 PC/servers)

I dont see the benefits of even shutting down the server, how much money do they save  ??

Unless the goal is to piss off old school gamer xD

Im pretty sure 1 computer server can host several/multiple games today ??

But yes.. someday xD can only "wish" it never happens

Im one of the few who still plays D2LoD

It’s gonna happen, and I swear it’s coming soon. The servers are basically a ghost town. You’ve got maybe 25 dudes playing tops, and most days it’s just d2child logging in to lovingly fap click his stash for five minutes before logging off to go scroll jsp for the same 25 dudes’ leftovers.

Gotta agree with all this here, it's almost like we're related lol. Hard to elaborate on it.

Although this is true too ... it's kind of sad. Maybe i should prepare for the long lonely road of single player.

i heard d1 servers are still online. so i assume d2 might be online forever as a living archive of what used to exist.

How do you know its gonna happen? Who told you it'll happen soon?

🟦 Diablo II isn’t just an old game — it’s a pillar of Blizzard’s legacy.

Blizzard treats Diablo II the same way Nintendo treats Ocarina of Time or Square treats FFVII:
it’s sacred, it’s iconic, and it still makes them money and reputation.

Even today:
• Blizzard still posts official anniversary celebrations for Diablo II.
• They highlight Diablo II as one of their most important games ever created.
• D2R sales continue to pull in revenue because of the nostalgia and legacy of LoD.
• Diablo II is still seen everywhere in Blizzard marketing when they talk about “the golden age.”

This is not a game they want bad headlines about.

🟩 No company kills a legendary title unless it becomes a liability.

Diablo II is not a liability. It’s:
• cheap to keep online
• constantly referenced in modern Diablo content
• a loyalty anchor for older fans
• historically significant
• and still surprisingly active even today

Companies don’t shut down something that strengthens their brand identity.

🟧 What Blizzard is likely doing

Rather than killing the legacy LoD servers, Blizzard has pretty much:

Placed them into “eternal maintenance mode.”

That means:
• Few updates
• Almost zero dev time
• But servers stay up
• Because turning them off would piss off long-time fans for no gain

This is exactly what many companies do for legendary titles:
keep them alive, untouched, and cheap.

🟥 A full shutdown would be a public-relations disaster

Imagine Blizzard trying to announce:

“We’re shutting down Diablo II: LoD forever.”

The community — especially the old-school fans — would explode.
Bad PR for no profit, and Blizzard knows that.

They’ll risk almost anything else before they risk alienating nostalgia-driven fans.

🟦 My prediction (based on industry patterns)

As long as:
• the servers don’t become a legal/security threat
• Blizzard still profits from the Diablo II brand
• D2R continues to rely on D2 nostalgia
• the cost remains tiny

The LoD servers stay up.
Not thriving… but alive.

Probably for decades.

Had to ask chatgpt cause their uncle works at blizzard.

port them into d2r with a legacy realm. no more refreshing chars, no more sharing chars, no more multiple realms. it would really revitalize the play too. being able to get pp items and bugged items from all realms.
