Video doing the rounds today apparently new, execution of a Russian POW by UA soldiers with right sector patches and UA armbands, posted proudly to their own telegram channel
some of the more clear cut and unambiguous proof of war crimes given they had their flags on armbands, no way to spin that one

june: 1212 ua for 27 ru
september: 1000 ua for 24 ru
october: 1000 ua for 31 ru
november 1000 ua for 30 ru
probably missing some



hindsight for us, but at the time it looked like the whole country was going to fall and he'd wind up on a meat hook in the streets
I don't know how an election could possibly be held, because even if we could wave a magic wand and guarantee free secure elections encompassing the former territory of Ukraine, we'd have to account for the massive population shifts as western Ukrainians fled west to the US/EU and Russians immigrated west into the newly incorporated oblasts and such a huge number of western Ukrainians are dead. And they can't vote except for democrats.


I enjoy macabre stats as much as the next guy, but I've heard about this and I have to believe it's because Russia just does a better job cleaning up the battlefield and are the ones advancing (thus have the ability to scour the ruins of a battlefield) while the Ukrainians don't have access to the dead bodies.

That's what I was saying, Russia has been advancing for a year so they're the ones recovering bodies. We've got a fog of war with no way to get verifiable statistics, so all we can do is look at the few bits of evidence we can verify and the strategy. And those body swaps are just one data point.
It stands to reason that if the Russians were trying to fight inside of cities, street to street sweeps, they'd be taking far heavier casualties than their current operations where they just reduce a town to rubble and stroll in when UA forces retreat.
Artillery has been clearly lopsided but drones have been harder to tell.

That's a reply for the specific case of Ukraine, but his wider counterargument to the "NATO eastern expansion"-talking point is valid. NATO expanding eastward doesn't automatically prove that NATO was secretly the aggressor in this conflict, it can be just as easily explained as the vast majority of Russia's former satellites having a strong pro-Western consensus and wanting to make sure that they'd never have to live under the Russian yoke again.

Ukraine was a more dicey case because the country had a roughly 50:50 split, but the reason behind Poland, Czechia, Latvia etc. joining NATO is crystal clear and it's not because they were coerced to do it.


By the way: if the United States had wanted to, they could have crushed Russia economically and geopolitically during the early- mid-90s while Russia hit rock bottom and was barely able to survive. Why wait 20 years to slowly encircle them with proxies and forward bases instead?

I really really want to believe that even into the 1990s we still had some strategists with self-preservation and the collective good in mind who could play chess beyond 1 move deep. Because a catastrophic breakup of the USSR instead of a more orderly dissolution would have meant chaos, war and famine with a splintered military still holding onto an apocalypse-worth of nuclear weapons. It has never been in our interests to crush Russia or the Soviets before them, its been in our interests to outcompete them in the past, and now to leverage them to outcompete China.
