Thanks everyone for the comments, it means a lot to me!
Insane to me to hoard items worth thousands and thousands of dollars only to let them rot till the servers go offline and it all be gone
I never understood collecting stuff in games rather than rl
Thanks for bringing this up. I've actually been thinking about it over the past few days. For me, there are several reasons why I collect items like these. First of all, I've witnessed one-of-a-kind items vanish because people forgot to refresh their characters or simply turned their backs on D2. Even worse, some devalued these items—both in spirit and substance—by creating invalid copies. I'm someone who tends to think long-term, and I've always liked the idea of taking responsibility for preserving these items. Sure, that comes with a massive cluster risk. What if something happens to me and I'm no longer able to refresh? And yes, I’m aware that all the items above are technically drained of their intended purpose—being used in-game.
But for me, it's not just about utility. It's about legacy, about preserving fragments of a world that once felt alive, shared, and meaningful. Each item carries a story: of battles fought, trades negotiated, friendships formed, and moments that made the game more than just code. Holding onto them is my way of honoring that history, of keeping those memories tangible in a space where everything else is fleeting. It’s not about what they do it’s about what they meant, and still mean to me. And that's what I want to share with you.
