we're keeping his memory here in the USA, "Admiral Nelson" is the name of the worst spiced rum sold in most stores.

I just looked it up and I swear I've seen it before, but I had never read it properly and made the connection.

Good to know that he died for something worthwhile, at least.

college kids across the nation order a rum and coke and trick themselves into thinking it's made with Captain Jack. Little to they know it's Admiral Nelson. put enough sugar in it and you can't taste the difference, thus is the american way.

Admiral Nelson is way cooler:

- Blinded in one eye in 1794 from a musket shot throwing up stones and sand (this is where the saying "turning a blind eye" comes from)
- Lost his right arm to a cannonball in 1797 when leading the charge
- Scars on head and body from numerous battles; in chronic pain

Still commanded the fleet at age 47 with one arm and one eye.

New poll of French people's attitudes in Le Monde today:

81% don’t think democracy is working for them
66% think most politicians are corrupt
71% think their living standards are getting worse.
57% have trouble making ends meet
85% think France ‘needs a real leader to restore order’.
63% say they don’t ‘feel at home any more’.

Is sectarianism leading to authoritarianism in France? I think we're getting there.

I think the only open question at this point is which side will get into power first: the auth left around Mélenchon, or the auth right around Le Pen.

I think when push comes to shove, the centrists will tip it for Le Pen. I know it was the opposite outcome a few years ago, but things have gotten a lot worse since that point, and that tends to favour the right wing party.

I think that they're trying to radicalize people. No normal person thinks this is okay. Question is how would people fight back against the government in todays times? Back then it was at least somewhat of an even playing field with swords and other devices, but here swords won't do anything against guns.
