The trajectory is not toward peace, but toward confrontation.

Instead of a possible trajectory towards confrontation, could the EU spending increase in defense be a deterrent for Putin to attack nato?

It doesn't make sense for NATO to try to create a deterrent to something that was never in Russia's rational self-interest to begin with.
Either you believe Russia is a rational actor and would respond to an armed Europe by avoiding war, or you believe Russia is an irrational actor and a deterrent won't affect their decisions.
Putin had an obvious and direct reason to invade Ukraine, a country which has historically been Russia since the time of Catherine the Great and holds Russian military bases and was seized from Russia's sphere by a color revolution.

Goom gave my response tbh.

let me try to put it another way, in a way that you can agree:

Europe, Not America, is building up its armed forces. It does not want to "invade" Russia. it (as an entity) truly believes that if Russia "wins" in Ukraine, that Russia will be emboldened to invade Poland and then Germany. Therefore europe believes it needs a deterrent (as it stands europe basically has NO armed forces). the confusing part, is that europe already has nuclear weapons, which is the ultimate deterrent.

For this reason alot of the things going on right now with this weapons build up and state actors, makes no sense to a rationale mind. because we are dealing with people and groups that are not acting rationally.

I picked up a buddy getting back after a trip 'overseas'. He told me how there were swastikas everywhere, but moreso everyone was wildly antisemitic and were going out of their way to ask him about the jews in america. They talked about jews like a guy on paleo talks about his diet. Besides the videos he took of being bombed every single night all night long, he had a whole bunch of hats, facemasks, shirts, decals, etc the AFU had given him because apparently they have that shit to give away in spades, and I helped him go through it and identify the non-obvious nazi symbols and banderite stuff to throw away. In my garbage no less, so I really hope no hobos were perusing my bin that week. But I'm going to disregard the physical evidence I've seen and the firsthand reports I've heard because you linked a warmongering neocon think tank.

Sounds legit. Not. Take it out of your garbage and post some pics.
Also curious, where are you from and where did your friend travel overseas?

Not in russias self interest? How many countries has Putin invaded? You don't think that should be a concern to neighboring EU countries?

Ukraine isn't part of Russia, no matter how far back you attempt. Remember, Kiev is much older than Moscow.

Dear lord man....

Gee where does the AFU operate

Russia has invaded the one country that has been their breadbasket and backyard for centuries, populated by ethnic Russians and host to still operating critical. Russian infrastructure. The one that was ripped out of their control by a violent color revolution to deliver it to the US/EU. Why should neighboring already-NATO countries be concerned about Russia stopping NATO expansion to the east?

Cool and they used to fight wars against the muslim expansion and against serf uprising, nobody cares and it has no impact on modern geopolitics. The history of the cossacks and their joining the nazis does. The history of ukraine being folded into russian from 1774 to 1991, and then still a satellite state until the maidan in 2014, that sure matters.

West Ukraine was a country with a pro-western minority living under a pro-Russian majority. The former led an anti-democratic revolution to throw out the elected leaders and had nazi groups establish a dictatorship. And you know what? The world can live with that, if they stayed in their own borders and dropped their unrealistic claim of jurisdiction over the east that voted to join Russia.

From a geo-political perspective Putin had a damn good reason to invade Ukraine after everything else failed and the West is to blame for it all.

And no Russia wasn't expanding towards the EU the fact of the matter is that it's the other way around, NATO has been expanding East for decades.

Kiev was a capital (not the first one) of Rus', not Ukraine.
The version about Kyiv being founded 1500 years ago is merely a legend. It became a Russian city after its conquest by Oleg. Before this glorious moment, Kyiv was part of the Khazar Khaganate, a Turkic state.
The first capital of Rus' - Staraya Ladoga - is mentioned in chronicles at least from the year 862.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staraya_Ladoga

By the way, someone stole Staraya Ladoga's coat of arms.

Ukraine is returning to its roots in the Khazar Khaganate; even its elite has adopted Judaism, as in the old days.

Similarly to Nord stream, totally random events are occurring to Russian linked refineries in EU states. Nothing to see here.

Explosions were reported on Monday, October 20th at oil refineries in Romania and Hungary.

In Romania, a blast occurred around noon at the Petrotel-Lukoil refinery in Ploiești, southern Romania. According to Világgazdaság, the facility is owned by a subsidiary of Russian Lukoil and was shut down due to a scheduled technical inspection on October 17th. One worker, 57, suffered serious leg and head injuries and was hospitalized in intensive care.

“It is not yet clear what happened, no scenario can be ruled out,” Világgazdaság reported. While technical failure or human error are possible explanations, the incident occurs amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Due to intensifying Russian and Ukrainian military operations specifically targeting energy infrastructure in recent weeks, authorities note that some kind of “organized action” cannot be ruled out.

The facility is one of the largest in Romania, with an annual processing capacity of 2.5 million tons.

Separately, a fire broke out at Hungarian oil giant MOL’s Százhalombatta oil refinery in Hungary. Local residents reported hearing an explosion and seeing heavy smoke. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, and no injuries were reported, with authorities investigating the incident. Unlike the Romanian facility, the Hungarian refinery is not Russian-owned.
