I have good news then rust is like counter strike in a way where anyone can host their own servers so if you don't want to pvp you can join pve only servers. Some servers are vanilla some are modded and have crazy stuff there are thousands of servers.

I've kind of been enjoying it lately, it's definitely pretty tough with a squad and even tougher solo. There is gun customization, but you don't get it until you hit a certain level then you gotta level your gun up to unlock different things like optics, grips, mags etc.

It also is exactly what you mentioned in the beginning, land on a planet do all the missions head to the extraction point and wait for pickup while getting swarmed by bugs
