A big box store in a good location with high traffic can do 100 million in sales per year, and usually have 1-3% profit margins on groceries. Shoplifting just ruins their entire business model and the theft from the locals probably eclipses the theft from the officials.
The CEO laid out the financials and said how the city just gave them $750k in May after that meeting and he used it to pay down the existing debts and repairs and remained still $40k in debt and bleeding money, with a net operating loss of $885k for last year.
If its a race between government incompetence and government corruption, the former wins every time, they'll never be as conniving as they are retarded
Sleeping on it, this anecdote is a little hamstrung when trying to fit and relate to a real socialist model. As another pointed out, seems their setup was very vulnerable to money laundering given the rate of failure not to mention petty crime. Then there is the aspect of the vendors/distributors/suppliers not following the same model. It's a good thought experiment, but this community built a socialist store in capitalist desert terrain.
The Cub we talked about ultimately had the same fate due to crime and being in Midway sketch
