After countless hours of troubleshooting the multibox lockup issue on Windows 11, I finally found the fix.

The fix is simple, but you'll lose ability to use WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux).

Disable Virtual Machine Platform.

Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off

Or press window key and search "Turn Windows features on or off"

Uncheck Virtual Machine Platform

Also I would uncheck Windows Hypervisor Platform for good measure.

You'll need to reboot your PC after.

We tried allllllll the things people were recommending but this and downgrading to Windows 10 are the only solutions we have found that actually work.

Hmm this isn't the end-all-be-all fix because Virtual Machine Platform and Windows Hypervisor Platform were already unchecked for me and d2r is crashing multiple times a day.

Could be a different problem. You’re crashing with multibox? Or locking up?

I have two accounts, running them in fullscreen or windowed mode. Limit each to 50% render, 30fps, etc but either way I get freezes where the screen locks up but the mouse moves VERY slowly (1 or 2 fps). The music keeps playing but is on a weird 4 second loop. The only way out is a hard reset.

I've tried a lot of things: vsync off, disable audio reverb, higher priority instance in task man, disable cpu 0 affinity, disable all win11 gaming enhancements.

The lockups I’m referring are complete system lockups that require a hard boot.

That’s really weird. It’s literally all I changed, rebooted, no more issues.

Oh shit, you know what, I also removed the virtual memory page file!

Try that!

I think you might need both, because the page file removal alone didn’t do it, I also had to disable virtualization.

To disable the page file in Windows 11, navigate to System Properties > Advanced system settings > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change. Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives", select "No paging file" for the desired drive, click "Set," then "OK," and restart your computer
