While everyone's busy posting the umpteenth Epstein thread and deciding which porn game to buy next, I figured I'd come back in with, ya know an actual real event thats happening. Now!

If you live in or planned to travel to the UK extremely recently, you were likely affected by this. As that 130+ number is not some inflated hyperbole.

What might be [although I doubt it unless the UK really is that inept, I don't live there] is the "Cyber Attack" part of this story. Its rather new "news" but with the rather large amount of flights affected, I doubt it was a mistake on the part of the NATS, Who are brushing off the MORE THAN HUNDRED flights affected as a problem with the radar in the air traffic control system. This is looking more like foul play and the work of a hacker group.

Everyday I log into my bank and brokerage and think one day it's going to be a scene from South Park, aaand it's gone, but from a cyber attack.

It will be the modern warfare. Total financial institution disruption, air traffic, mobile disruption, etc.

It's only going to get worse, that's my prediction.

Often times it's a third party coordinating these attacks.
They don't care who the target is, just so long as they get paid.

People are going to SERIOUSLY regret putting information on cellphones/computers/database/website/etc

AI and Quantum computing can find vulnerabilities in software, hardware or user interactions.

The best of times is coming to a close for the internet in the coming decades.

There's so many smaller businesses and institutions out there as well and everything these days needs you to make accounts and enter info. I worry my information will easily be compromised via one of these smaller places.

While your concerns are valid, these kinds of "change bad, simple good" arguments are flawed because you cannot maintain world power without adopting technology

If your country doesn't use computers everywhere, another country will and the productivity gains they achieve will help them to surpass your country

I'm not saying change is bad I'm just predicting a higher increase in data breaches, and warfare fully evolving to the digital battlefield to create chaos.

Yes, as a software engineer who has worked at many large US companies, I can assure you that most engineers (including at FAANG type companies) just want to get things done and security is often an afterthought

I can only imagine how bad the security practices are at small companies that don't have strong engineering departments. These include organizations controlling critical infrastructure

Edit: IMO software engineering should be similar to medical, construction, and financial fields, where certifications are mandatory to get hired. Every single software engineer should be required to pass web security 101
