It's huge. Imagine never having a natural quality baseline to make food decisions from. Poor people and public schools aren't serving heirlooms, so many don't know until they meet a hippy or go to some goofy high end dining and get their mind blown.

These are good changes for once around food health in the US. While past plays have been half measures IMO.

I think a good change would be to make pop taste like piss, not make anything taste better though in the case of this thread. Again with HFCS and sucrose there's no real difference health-wise at high consumption.

Everything under the sun in North America. It's all full of sugar, other than diet.

I look at some place like Japan that has such low obesity rates and their drinks by comparison have significantly less sugar. Their beverage sizes are also significantly smaller as well.

Changing the type of sugar from hfcs to cane isn't doing anything. Making it mandatory to significantly reduce what they can put in might be a start. How one regulates that I don't know.

Japan has arguably the most extreme fat shaming culture
I recall their candy and beverages being just as unhealthy as US when I visited last. The portion sizes more modest/small though. Hell, could even drink in public was great. Lots of shaming though when outside their norms

They still have some similar products but like a vending machine you can get sweet tea but that sweet tea is not even close to your average ice tea in America that has the same level of sugar as any can of pop.

Also their fast food options or grab and go options are just so vast. Go to a gas station or 7/11 here in north American it's like egg salad, hot dogs, chips and pop.

Meanwhile you go to a 7 elevan in Japan and you have good options and lots of them.

There's also an expectation that you finish your food. North America you go to a chain and you see so much waste on plates because serving sizes are massive.

Shame is by far the greatest solution. That or actual top-down government solutions (punitive tax for being fat, tax refunds for being fit)

The problem is that people who act like they want to be fat, WILL be fat in our society since food is no longer scarce. That means the only solution is personal discipline and self control (in short supply these days). Monetary and social incentives can help alot with this

I'm good with absolutely taxing junk and processed foods to the point it borderline becomes prohibitive and spinning that money into subsidies on raw ingredients / unprocessed foods. Treat junk food like cigarettes or alcohol here in Canada and add huge tax to it.

Good God that program would be beautiful.

Oh so the guy who gets a 15min cig break every 3 hours is fucked

Oh old betty sue who eats 40 big macs a day losing her medical care

Oh you want to be fat and lethargic(TAXED)

Oh you want to be in shape and do shit(TAX REBATE)

If only it could be that easy lol

edit: But really whose the bigger burden on society and the taxes we pay a fat slob or someone who takes care of themselves?

Its actually shockingly simple how such a program could be implemented

Everyone must attend an annual physical exam. If you miss your slot and don't rebook, you get the maximum tax.

If you're unhealthy (a tax burden), you get taxed according to the severity to a maximum. If you get healthier on your next checkup, you get an additional bonus refund.

If you're healthy (a subsidizer), you get a refund according to your level of health. If you get unhealthier on your next checkup, you get an additional penalty tax.

One of the first principles of economics is that people respond to incentives and disincentives, carrots and sticks. Such a program would clean up the nation significantly.

The problem is that most people are fat slobs and they vote, which means this will never happen so long as we live in a liberal democracy. So continues the race to the bottom unless this system is radically changed.
