Republicans sure do love sticking the military nose into warm sandy places.

(edit) personally, I wish donny would invade China and Russia, at once. Leave the Tusken Raiders alone. Look what happens when Americans turn a desert into a metro area.
Deserts are for the worst humans.

We should ask the military veterans in this forum how they feel. Where’s Jere?

So you think the usa should not have paid? Iran had placed $400 million in a U.S. Foreign Military Sales trust fund in the 1970s for military equipment that was never delivered due to the Iranian Revolution.
The $1.7 billion payment consisted of the $400 million principal plus $1.3 billion in interest owed on the fund.
This was a settlement of a legal arbitration case between the U.S. and Iran over the interest owed.

This was not funding given to Iran. The amount quoted refers to foreign assets that belonged to Iran and were frozen by sanctions imposed to impede its nuclear program. The JCPOA was also an international agreement between Iran and a number of major world powers, including the U.S.

Granted, donny wouldn't have listened to the arbitration and paid it.....

America had to force Switzerland to stop protecting the money of terrorists after 9/11. Your money should not be safe anywhere in the civilized world if you fund terror.

That said, the payment was leveraged to ensure the release of American hostages. Iran described it as a ransom payment, which wasn't explicitly true but it was implicit. That's also not great.

It's funny for republicans and democrats to point fingers at each other for helping Iran. Both sides are guilty. Turns out they're all assholes again, it's shocking every single time.
