The feds have unsealed indictments from the Minneapolis federal raid that set off the initial wave of rioters attacking agents, who falsely believed it was an ICE deportation raid. This was from last week, priming the antifa types in LA who are rioting right now.
As it turns out, the feds had discovered 900 lbs of meth in a burnsville storage unit, estimated at $25 million in value. The federal agents then carried out searches in 6 locations related to the drug traffickers who stored the meth, and their ring of money laundering, human trafficking, firearms and other drugs. At one of the locations in Lake Street at a taco shop is where rioters confronted and harassed federal agents, with one woman now indicted for assaulting, impeding and resisting officers, as well as two others who were charged last week.

So that's how this all started. To be clear;



They had stumbled onto the crystal meth stash in an unrelated search, then got warrants to go after drug gangs.
A bunch of liberals showed up and assumed they were ICE coming to deport illegal aliens and tried to interfere with the feds, and then when ICE actually did show up in LA the rioters were already primed

The overarching question: how legitimate are protests against the enforcement of the law? Which threshold has to be crossed before it becomes justified for the government to crack down on these protests or efforts at obstruction?

The underlying disconnect behind this clash is simply that most lefties and liberals don't consider illegal entry into the US a crime to begin with, and thus consider deportation efforts illegitimate in a moral/policy sense.

Well for one they're not protests...

Well, to the extent that protests devolve into rioting, violence, looting etc, a crack down is of course justified. The much more interesting discussion is what the federal government is supposed to do when otherwise peaceful protesters surround ICE buildings or block off fed vehicles from certain neighborhoods.

If they're blocking off Fed vehicles it is not peaceful, by definition. That's an unlawful restriction of movement tantamar to kidnapping. You said it yourself, "otherwise". If they're peacefully there, not impeding anyone, it's fine. It's nowhere close to an interesting discussion

It's not hard, it's legitimate if there is no violence. Mobbing vehicles is violence
