At home I used VMs for games like Maplestory so I could play/buff multiple characters at once. Also for testing/investigating malware

We use them at work for various reasons, but the most common application is using a Windows 10 VM to run a program that isn’t compatible with Windows 11/MacOS.

Edit: HyperV @ home, VMWare @ work. Would highly advise against VMWare if you can help it

Why would I avoid it? What are the pros and cons?

VMs are great to compartmentalize

QubesOS is a great example of a system designed with compartmentalization through the use of VMs:

Which it uses the Xen hypervisor
But you could also start of from any other linux distro, and inspired by that design make your own environment even with different hypervisors like QEMU/KVM

Depending on the usecase, containers such as Docker and LXC can also be used for similar purposes and are more lightweight than full sized VMs so for specific applications, containers allow to scale better

Few years ago tried playing around with hyper-v but iirc couldnt passthrough the RTX 3090 through it or whatever cause was a consumer grade GPU as opposed to server-grade like the Tesla V100s or whatever before that, which is just retarded
No issue whatsoever doing the whole PCIe passthrough with KVM tho, so would also recommend that over the proprietary bullshits from microsoft

Also, Oracle are actual straight up pieces of shit (it a whole rabbithole) so would also avoid virtualbox too

tldr:
QEMU/KVM with virt-manager is very user friendly
Xen is also awesome as seen from its use on QubesOS

Predatory pricing model after they got bought out by Broadcom, especially for smaller users/businesses. It might be a good thing to learn if you have some extra time but I wouldn't invest too much in it

VirtualBox is also decent choice for creating VMs locally.

VirtualBox is also decent choice for creating VMs locally.

i mean, it's alright
back in 2010 or whatever with the computer had at the time which wasnt really that good, had setup Linux for Host and 3x Windows XP virtual machines with Virtualbox to run the D2 LoD bots with Etal at the time, with auto reboot the computer if lost electricity or whatever and the VMs automatically starting at boot, then from XP side, autologin and the bots autolaunching even if was away doing other things or sleeping

but then it was kolbolt had to run with Windows 10 instead which was too bloated to scale efficiently, sadly

but for ease of use still rather KVM nowadays, as even to make a backup of the whole VM is a single .qcow2 file so that's pretty straight forward even for that

EDIT:
Also nowadays doing the GPU passthrough thing aint that bothersome as it used to be, if thats something that is needed
even Proxmox nowadays can passthrough the integrated graphics from Ryzen CPUs:

What are the practice prompts that come up most often the training wants you to ensure you understand? Perhaps a staple to secure something.
