Tech giant IBM is reportedly planning to eliminate approximately 9,000 jobs in the United States in 2025, according to sources cited by The Register. This strategic shift involves relocating a significant number of these roles to India.

Job cuts have been reportedly confirmed in several locations across the US, including Raleigh, North Carolina; New York City and State; Dallas, Texas; and California.

Sources describe this move as a “resource action,” with the primary goal of transferring employment opportunities to India. This strategy has reportedly been underway for several years, with one source stating, “They’re trying to move as many roles to India as possible.”

This restructuring is anticipated to generate new roles or expand existing teams in India, particularly for professionals with expertise in cloud computing, infrastructure, sales, and consulting.

Thoughts?
It seems that corporates would like to lower world wide employee wages to Indian levels.
Does the internet bring the end to USA/EU white-collar workforce, as it can be outsourced to India for fraction of the cost?
Where is the world heading?

Nothing new. Big4 started outsourcing work pushing 10 years now to India and the Philippines and now every mid size does it.

It's not just that though most low level financial services is outsourced now.

Many graduates now are faced with the issue of how to get experience to get past those level 1 and 2 positions when those positions are outsourced now for labour that's sub 10 an hour and available 24/7. No holidays no downtime.

With that said, until educations get better you spend a good amount of time having to review and fix everything that gets sent back so it's not as efficient as it can be yet. In fact if you go real cheap it's a dogs breakfast. I have zero doubts though that it will improve.

Definitely not ideal for young graduates.

Story is not entirely about outsourcing to cheaper markets. It is partly true but it’s also about AI being integrated to do HR functions. A lot of their functions can and will likely just be automated. A chat bot can triage complaints and funnel to a human. A bot can post new roles and crawl a resume for good fit. Same with record keeping, payroll, etc.

I think there’s a significant wave of white collar profession obsolescence that comes next. It won’t all happen at the same time because it would cause huge issue but watch out.

A lot of the jobs being sent to India are also in line for automation. It's a bit of a problem, because automation costs money and it's not a great return when resources cost $10-15k a head all-in.

This has been going on for couple of decades now, since the globalisation took off.

Of course corporations would like to have all the emloyees working for Indian wages.

The problem is, it’s difficult to find competent people in India. And those who are try their best to get out of there. Or at least charge Western-ish wages.

Not to memtion cultural differences, to put it mildly.

A company I worked for previously bumped into this exact problem.

Why are you crying about it ?
Double Standard really.

Getting shivers because instead of outsourcing to Poland they are starting to outsource to India?
