I think that's really a crucial and still underrated point: a collateral effect of the "educational realignment" of politics which took place over the past 10 or so years is that the beliefs of the journalist, media and corporate classes have become increasingly out of step with the beliefs of normies.
This has caused damage to the reputation of the MSM from two angles: first because it led to an increase in the partisan bias of their reporting. And second because it led to MSM articles and opinion pieces increasingly taking the 20% position on 80:20 issues. Imho that's the fundamental reason why Trump was able to break the left's cultural hegemony in 2024 whereas he failed at that in 2016.
Media skepticism doesn't make people smarter or more informed though. It does the opposite. So you can rationalize the skepticism and point to examples as to how the MSM sucks, but the result is mostly just uninformed and/or misinformed idiots.
People who watch CNN and read the NYT/WaPo/WSJ are way more informed than people who get their news from Joe Rogan/twitter/other random sources. And it's not just more information they have, it's more accurate information, as opposed to inaccurate information that the other person has.
The MSM is flawed. Alternative media is way more flawed, and it's not even close.
