Yes. This is also helpful for loans and keeping track of history of items.

A small addition I would like to add to your idea is that the name of the user is also shown in the transaction at the time the transaction is made. This idea could help with that (people name change a lot, so older transactions get lost in the shuffle).

Export your gold logs by years and filter it as you please.

I am of the same sentiment. In the rare occasion where this is really necessary, I'd simply go ahead and export my gold logs.
While I get where you're coming from with this suggestion, it would in my opinion be an addition to our site that would be only used in the rarest of cases if at all.
