My co workers are afraid of the Twin Cities since Floyd, and other paralleled regions. One used the light rail system and that was game over. USA is huge though, it's really region by region. Most Midwest states are as large as EU nations, lots of variation.
As for tourism, don't care. As far as I'm concerned many parts of the US need to rip the tourism as a replacement for actual industries bandaid off. For example, my region touts environmental tourism industry which is great, until you realize it's Seasonal 5 month boom, 7 month shit. And most of the tourists are completely out of touch citidiots. Worse, the second property owners running commercial real estate in residential single family zoned small towns. Yeah, tourism is really good. We love th Canadians especially, great tippers
We all have our local problems, that's not the point though. Imagine, you have to apply for a visa, have to disclose everything, get the permission, buy a ticket, board it. When you arrive, some borders officer who doesn't like you for some reason or thinks you're suspicious can detain you without prior notice, put you together with real criminals for several days and deport you without you having a chance to consult a laywer and clarify what went wrong and can be amended.
Think outside the USA bubble and imagine you were that person. It sucks, right? That's called a police state. Here, the actual examples:

They say before they were deported they were made to sign forged statements they didn't make. They were threatened to be kept longer in the detention center if they didn't sign.
