It can be the same, but it doesnt have to be the same.
Non religious is a broad spectrum. Atheism isnt as wide.

For example, my dad is not religious. He is a member of the catholic church, because he always was, but he is not religious. Not at all.

He never goes to chruch, he never prays, he never read the bible.

An atheist is someone who is way more into the topic. An atheist actively decided to not be part of any religion, because he opposes all of them in a very active sort of way while people like my parents just dont care. They are traditionally part of a religion - but not out of belief.

Sigh...is Google too difficult? Atheism means a lack of belief in God's not disbelief. It's impossible hate that which hasn't been proven to exist so your entire premise is flawed.

the definition of atheism here holds two contradicting ideas, it would be easier to answer the question if you defined it more clearly.

But plenty of religions don't have gods

a lot of atheists changed the definition of atheism to "lack of belief" which is nonsense "lack of belief" would be agnostic. some atheists trying to keep their atheism will say "im agnostic atheist". what has happened over the past few decades or longer is 'atheism has been losing the argument. so they keep restructuring the argument being to proud and stubborn to just move from 'atheist claim to agnostic. is it ironic? that the 'atheist who rails the most against God also happens to be the most prideful being? and scriptures perhaps have the greatest warning about pride.
