May I remind you that it is the US that has implemented blanket tariffs on its supposed allies and is threatening to not defend them in NATO. You are the ones that are breaking up the western democratic world order, not us.

All we can do is react to this huge geopolitical shift. If Europe cannot count on America, it has to become completely independent militarily and economically, while forging an even closer relationship with allied countries outside of the EU, like the UK and Japan.

Once we have decoupled, we can deal with the US and China as transactional partners, rather than as key allies.

On your specific question: we can protect industries that are victim to Chinese dumping if necessary, like the EU did with steel. Everyone tends to focus on cars, but it's a miniscule proportion of GDP. Outside of Germany, Europe is more services-based, where there is still a huge competitive advantage over China.

Germany makes up something like 25% of the population and 33% of the economy of the EU. And countries like the Netherlands or Slovakia are heavy on manufacturing, too. As is northern Italy. This notion that Europe is a deindustrialized wasteland like large swaths of the UK and the US is just not true.

Everything is downstream from military power.
