I would replace the word religion with the word gay on his email and ask him to do a test first.

One of the best ways to combat religious people is to flip their logic against them. Put the shoe on the other foot and watch them implode.

Anyway if you want to craft a particular response I would be happy to help you. Would you like to post the test here with particulars changed to generic names to keep confidential so we may examine this.

I love the Ricki Gervais response for religious bullies

Here is what you do get with him 1 on 1

Ask him what is his religion
He will say xyz
Then you ask him how many other religions are out there 1000-3000?
He will agree there are many
You then ask him do you believe in those other 3000 religions and all their gods?
He will say ofc not I only believe xyz religion.

Then you drop this line "well boss I am just like you, I just don't believe in those 3000 religions + one more"

Dealing with religious bullies can be really challenging, especially when they use their beliefs to judge, shame, or pressure others. The key is to set clear boundaries while staying grounded in your own values. You don’t have to argue or prove anything—often, just calmly stating that you respect their beliefs but expect the same in return is enough to assert yourself. It’s okay to walk away from conversations that become toxic or overly preachy. If someone is constantly using religion to make you feel small or wrong, that’s not about faith—that’s about control, and you don’t have to tolerate it. Lean on supportive people who understand you, and remember, your spiritual or non-spiritual path is yours alone. No one gets to hijack it.

Doing nothing is going to get him fired. Bullies thrive on you folding like a lawn chair they will just come back for more. Remember he works there everyday for the last 25 years.

He can bait the bully to leave a bigger paper trail or to record more conversations. Which he should be doing. I am here to give him all the help he needs this is my area of expertise.

You should tell him you're Pastafarian and worship the true god of his wholey wheat noodle appendages and will also need exemptions on certain days to wear your colander hat to observe the wholey days.

But it's discrimination for sure already, in the US you really can't ask about things like that and especially can't as a supervisor make an issue out of it like that. Could already start prepping a case to sue in the future, not sure how it is in other parts of the world where you're at.

Hades does not care if you believe in gods or not, he will welcome you at the gates in the Underworld.

You could also say you believe in a religion but don't tell him which one. Just write a few Egyptian squiggles and say there is no English equivalent.
