There are also many cases where a trade deficit still does not justify US tariffs.

Take Bangladesh as an example, a country with a modest trade surplus of just $8 billion with the US.
They specialize in clothing production, exporting a significant portion to the United States. In return, Bangladesh imports essential items such as steel and fuel from the U.S., as these are crucial for the country’s development and industry, and they can only afford so much.

Bangladesh remains relatively poor, with a GDP per capita of only $2,500—roughly 3-5% of the U.S. GDP per capita.

Given this context, the recent 37% tariff imposed on Bangladesh seems pretty disproportionate.

Or take Lesotho, for a very similar example. Yeah, I wasn't implicitly justifying the tariffs for the other countries. Just pointing out that the "math" is inconsistent with countries depending on whether America has a surplus with them or not.

Here’s some good discussion on an approximation of what other countries charge in tariffs. It’s an approximation because it varies by sector. Pretty comical both how they came up with their fake number and how far off it actually is from what is occurring.

Doesn't matter the EU has ended its relationship with the US, It has picked China as its new Best Friend.
The only good news in the near term is China getting advanced lithography machines and GPU's possibly getting cheaper?

The EU imports from China and exports to the United States, in aggregate. China has no more interest importing more European goods than they did US goods during the first Trump administration. What goods they do want they'll rip off the IP and have domestic firms producing it within 2-3 years.

Agreed on trade deficit but do you think a trade deficit is necessarily bad?

If it both parties are buying and selling based on the fair market price and nothing else, good. If there are confounding factors that result in an unfair business environment such as tariffs, embargoes, etc, then bad. I believe in fair competition and mutual benefit and loathe handicaps.

So the argument is that everyone's actually been on a completely fair playing field, no bullshit exists, everyone is paying fair market price for everything, but America simply buys more stuff than it sells, and the entire current government is so stupid that they can't figure that out?

There are tariffs and trade deals and protectionism (some of those deals made by Trump himself in his first term) but mostly yes, they are very dumb. Trump famously was very bad in college

To be fair other parts of the government: they know better and just lie, because they anticipate their base to be dumb

What a groundbreaking discovery! What gave it away? My multiple posts where I specified that I am from germany or my willingness to call out stupidity when I see it?

You are a Foreign Agent, repeatedly attempting to sow deceit, on an American forum, about an American topic.

I am a german citizen heavily invested into your economy because I have money in ETFs. I am also directly affected because Russia is fighting a war 2 countries over and our most reliable ally for the last 5 decades turned to Putin loving fascists.

I am not lying, I am not an agent. Your politicians are lying a lot to you and you should really start caring about that or keep looking like the fool you most certainly are.
