China is one of the least future-proof countries on the planet due to catastrophic birth rates, untrustworthy currency, being long time rivals with virtually all of its regional neighbors, etc. China is not going to be any kind of hegemon, just a regional powerhouse. The United States has a higher age dependency ratio than China does. With the US at 53% and China at 44%.

They also both have a fertility rate of 1.7. With China having a slightly higher increase than the US's increase over the last 4 years.

By 2040 China will have 28% of its population over 60. The demographic issue will become worse as time goes on, looking at age dependency today doesn’t show that. China also doesn’t have the level of immigration the US. If we wanted to we can easily grow our population through immigration because 80% of the globes population would gladly come here. Not sure the same can be said about China.
