Decided to do an all-episode ranking, like i do on many series nowadays.

Have watched this for years, of course very on and off. First time watching through, about 10-15 years ago, there were so many episodes that were boring and unappealing. Not because of Peter Falk necessarily, but because of the low level of acting from the other actors, and the lack of coherence and directing of the plots. This has not changed since i did a rewatch now, and some episodes i simply had to skip.

BUT! "There is always a butt .... there should have been a butt!" ^^ (quote from Strange Bedfellows, one of the better episodes).. Some episodes are very good. Suddenly, the plot is coherent, the music is well composed, it's easy enough to follow while still being complex, the acting from all parts is on point, sharp and convincing. These episodes are classic gold nuggets that i recommend anyone to watch.

That is what i find so strange about Columbo, Bonanza and many other series ..... the quality is so varying. Some episodes, like described, the acting is just crystal clearly so much better, than certain other episodes, where everything literally is not just off, but completely misdirected, unappealing, uninteresting, impossible to follow, and downright boring. I just don't understand how that is possible. The "Last salute to the commodore" is widely considered to be such an episode, and i rated i a 0.. yes, a zero. It's that bad. Watch for yourself - if you can ^^

Here is the rankings chart. I recommend to watch anything rated 7 or above if you're not necessarily a huge fan. Rankings of 3-6 are episodes that can be watched, i mean there are redeeming qualities. 2 and below, the bore factor is huge and there is little talent going on.

One last point, if anyone follows astrology, they seem to have followed that quite well, since most of the energies of the actors in the series, are very much in line with the actors' respective zodiac signs. It's quite funny and gives another angle to the series. Falk himself is a third decan virgo, virgo/taurus, with moon in gemini (most likely, can range into third decan taurus since his time is unknown, i am conflicted and don't know), and fits the character very well ^^ The criminal in the second episode is a scorpio, and she fits that very well too. That episode is worth watching.

Since it is your personal view, I am not going to attack it, however my post may seem that way.

Columbo, The Avengers, Kojak, The Equalizer are just a few of the detective type programs around at the same time, oh, there was, "The Professionals" which were MI5 before MI6.

The funniest thing is this, you are basing your antics based on the modern versions of those shows and the plots behind them up to the year 2024 going into 2025... the industry has basically run out of things and have rehashed them... look at the FBI, CSI, Bones, and other shows that have rehashed the scenarios from those TV Shoes... dang, look at "Taken" as an example in the 2 seasons it was released, the only difference is the up to date technology.

Honestly... how about looking at the modern shows and realizing that they are just rehashed... hence easy to read, even the Tom Cruise remakes in movies for Mission Impossible... yup, all rehashed but got more intense with background music and explosions galore to cover up the same plot.

Oh... I hate the new movies / tv shows with background music galore... you can not even hear what the actors are saying and you need to use Subtitles. WTF is up with that shit.

Humm .... No, i am not basing them on modern series, because i haven't watched any modern series. Because they all suck. Or, i have tried, i am just disappointed every single time. If you have a recommendation for a new good detective series, fire away. I'll give it a shot. But feed me shit, and i'll rate it thereafter, lol.

Uhm. Hmm, the reason i decided to rate these series the way i do, is because the acting back then, while of course being conceited and easily read, is genuine quite a lot of the time. The episode i rate high, are what i consider timeless classics that they put effort into making good. I don't compare them to any other series .... i give every episode more than a fair chance.. several chances.

Glad to hear we agree on that musical/sound thing. Some background music and sounds can enhance a movie or series. But 95% of the time, these days, it's just overused and unnecessary. Sopranos is an example where they used music at least halfway okay, and sometimes, even intelligently.

I know it may go against your grain, it would to me, but i do recommend only watching the 5-points and above rated episodes first. Then go back and watch the rest if you feel like it. The lower rated episodes are really borefests. But, you may rate them differently though... i got kicked out from a columbo group on facebook because i retaliated against someone that was nasty to me for rating many episodes low. Insane.
