Let’s be real. Trump doesn’t do strategic plans. Everything is directly transactional. I don’t think Russia has something compromising on trump. Trump has been pretty open about his affection for nearly every strongman/dictator in the world. I just think he wants to view himself as “strong” and wishes to varying degrees he could rule the US like those dictators do. Those folks are also quite willing to shower him with praise and from his vain PoV strongman dictators praising him is great and reassures how strong he is.
It’s really not that deep. He isn’t compromised and he isn’t playing 3284 dimension chess with the world. It’s just who he is and how he responds.
I mean he explicitly laid it out as a strategic plan, 8 years ago in his national security strategy document outlining principled realism;
https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/NSS-Final-12-18-2017-0905.pdfIts anti-ideological, anti-tribal, results oriented strategy. Fight a zero sum trade game, win the peace through strength, contest resources and push competition.
Trump is pretty clear about who he is and what he wants.
