Because someone decided to make it 12 and not 30 or 10. Just like someone decided to use metric instead of imperial these are just measurement systems of time. We could of easily had a Chinese or Mayan calendar or another made up system. It's all made up.

A bunch of early primitives landed on a 12 because its a nice round number but it doesn't devide the year into equally perfect months some are some are 30 days some are 31 some are 28 then there is a leap year etc. They probably just said fuck it close enough. One day we will have a much more accurate system and update it to a new patch. For now we are using this one.

Try to make this observation, and the rest of what I said will make sense. These are not arbitrary numbers. How often does it take for the sun to rotate the entire earth? Exactly 12 moons.
