Tariffs are a tax on the country wtf do you mean? You want to trade with my country you pay a % tax on your goods. That's what a Tariff is.
I'll explain to you how they work.
Country X has 0% Tariff
Country Y has 25% Tariff
Country X's companies move operations to country Y to avoid the 25% Tax. Country X loses all the jobs from said company, while country Y gains those jobs.
Country X loses locality of said company, thus making prices of said company higher as the goods must be exported from Country Y back to Country X.
Country Y gains locality, as the goods are made in that nation and thus sold cheaper to the local and those closer to production than further out.
Then let's not even get into the more complex systems of Tariffs.
What if the USA and country Canada have a trade agreement where they will not place any tariffs on each other (small carve out here for dairy and like 2 other products)
Created together and agreed by all parties and then the US president makes up a fake emergency (fentanyl crossing the border) to place broad sweeping tariffs and remove them over and over again every couple of weeks without any real demands or reason?
Each time the US breaks this agreement Canada adds more retaliation and our president removes them again and again because he's crashing out stock market and gets scared.
Also he's dumb enough to put specific carve outs on certain us industries showing where we are the absolute weakest (oil, automotive, agriculture, Potash) making easy targets for Canada to find other buyers for those even if they lose a little money we would lose much more.
Art of the deal lose over and over and over gaining nothing and hurting his own citizens!
Side note there's a reason people don't use broad sweeping tariffs it doesn't work as well as your trying to say it does and leaves us vulnerable to targeted tariffs that cripple industries hereore than the broad ones benefit us. Example being the targeting of red state goods like alcohol and looking to find other buyers in Europe or China for the crude oil they sell us at a heavy discount which will hurt the US a massive amount if we lose access (we get 60-70% of our oil imports from Canada)
