their use is restricted to specific purposes, such as medical diagnosis or treatment
you cannot take a 23andme as a citizen for elective reasons, and can only do it under court order. that is illegal in israel
The restrictions are for financed tests.
Since Israel is social-democratic country, the public is entitled for medical test for free or with some state participation in the cost.
If you’ll like to get tested in one of the recognised institutions and to receive partly or full refund, you’ll need to follow regulated protocol -
1. Get genetic counselling to say you are entitled of a test
2. Go to one of the recognised institution and get tested.
All of the above is not applied for
private testing which you are entitled to do privately for whatever the market offers. However, in some cases , such as to determine a person’s Jewish identity, private tests won’t be valid in the state’s eyes.
The system in Israel is not that simple to understand. My wife works in healthcare and sometimes we even find it hard to follow regulations. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t do things privately and pay the full cost..
About 23andme, the servic can be also provided in Israel , however the results might not be valid for applying for different services from the state..
