I just don't understand the rhetoric, but I'm trying.

If US doesn't wanna be involved in the conflict, then fair enough. It's really got nothing to do with the US so I understand that argument. But if it's a European problem, then I don't see why America should get anything from the continent (resources and such). If you want to stay home, that's respectable, but you can't get half the cake. That's for party goers.
