yeah I completely agree

question wasn't whether he deserved a statue on the taxpayer dime though, just what he did to deserve a statue, replete with snarky remarks about the Duke lacrosse team etc.

as far as I'm concerned no taxpayer dollars should go to erecting statues of anything

Particularly impactful people or events are okay. War memorials, for instance, are fine. The Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are also fine.

If you're Virginian and revere the loyalty and honor of your State's greatest general of all time TO your state, even if he despised your insistence on maintaining slavery, Virginia tax dollars going towards a statue of General Lee is even fine.

There are reasons for statues of figures who have had actions that have a massive impact on the past, present, and future of your state or nation. Thing is, if it IS done on the public dime, it should be at the public's discretion. Meaning a vote/referendum.

I do get it though. "Why the hell is the government stealing the food off my table to build a statue to glorify themselves" doesn't sit well with many people.

A black rapist playing basketball is an apt representation of the USA.

Trump said that he will enact a statue of Kobe Bryant. Why does he deserve a statue? For being good at basketball?

For being bad at riding in a helicopter.

Listen Trump wasn't around to give them statutes of George Floyd, although this is an attempt at memorializing the Black American Community,
I feel like a more appreciable representation of the Black mans struggle in America would be a 20 ft bronze statute reflecting,
the apotheosis of a common unnamed black man jumping out of his chair for joy as Maury Povich reads him the words 'You are not the father'.

Thing is, athletes aren't heroes. Heroes can be athletes. But athletes, simply being good at a sport, aren't heroes. We've been through this so many times, for both black and white athletes. Not heroes. Just athletically gifted people who were good at sports entertainment.

But like, Cassius Clay is the opposite of a hero. He refused to go on a boxing tour of Vietnam. Said that Americans were his enemy, he should fight us rather than fighting the communists. Fuck Muhammad Ali.

The other two are fine, still no heroes. He'd have done better making statues of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Tuskegee what now? Syphilis study?
My idea is better, black people would love it.
