Another forced resignation for a few wrong choice of words. I can't believe we allow cancel culture to run rampant like this.

https://nypost.com/2025/02/18/us-news/nyu-gop-president-resigns-over-barron-trump-comments/

you can't even call someone an "oddity" or "weird" these days without facing serious backlash.. goddamn left these aren't even slurs. this is how far we've come.

He is an oddity. Triply so. Tall as an NBA player, President's son, and according to the comment, just goes to class, then goes home. Doesn't participate in school political gatherings.

Accurate comment. Not sure why she'd be "forced to resign". Doesn't seem like a way for the club to endear themselves. Either to Barron, or to Trump Supporters, tbh.

Easy enough to understand why he'd just go to class then go home. Via his father, he can experience real politics. Further, given multiple recent attempts on his father's life, the less time spent on campus, the better, tbh.

I can't access the originating Vanity Fair article because I'm unwilling to give them money, but The Hill describes a little more from it:

https://thehill.com/homenews/education/5152978-new-york-university-college-republicans-resign/

Quote
“He goes to class, he goes home,” she told the outlet, adding a professor joked Barron Trump “doesn’t really belong here.”

The national group said Walker’s comments do not “align with the values and principles upheld by our organization.”

While College Republicans believe Vanity Fair twisted Walker’s words, “we still found it to be inappropriate. The NYU chapter President submitted her resignation last night.”

Something tells me the comment about the professor led to the resignation. If it DOES follow the "cancel culture" pattern, they'd want the identity of the specific professor. Give the identity or resign. And such "jokes" from professors about students WOULD merit censure based on the school's own code of conduct.

Either way, for the intial portion of the comment, I agree. He's an oddity. ANY sitting US President's son attending your University would be an oddity. NN a resignation for telling the truth.

Edit: If anyone has a vanity fair sub and wants to quote her full quoted comments from the article, that'd be super.

As a student I always have to keep opinions to myself or ill be a target. Funny how everyone else in school has freedom of speech because they're liberals, but I can't say anything even if it's something that's in the middle.

Exactly what is the big deal? Barron is pretty cool. It's a shame people cannot see the mirrors of conservative cancel culture and pretend as if it's only a liberal thing.

You can say what you want. But whatever you say can be met with criticism. There is a difference. When I am surrounded by conservatives. I say what I want but I'm met with vocal criticism. That's just the nature of college. A lot of students are liberals, that isn't necessarily a good thing either.

I have zero issue with Barron Trump. On the flipside, I have, as of yet, seen no evidence he's the future of the America First movement either. I'm cautiously optimistic at best. Seems like a good kid. You must admit it'd be odd to have him at your University though. Just like any other Sitting POTUS's son.

As to "cancel culture" there's a primary difference here. She wasn't booted from the University or forced to give up her education. Being pushed out of a leadership role in a club may suck, but if that club is trying to attract Barron into their ranks, her comments could be seen as counter to the club's goals.

I think the difference between what happened with her, which we still don't have the reasoning behind, and the standard "cancel culture" practiced against the right by the left in Universities is that she's not being kicked out of school. She's not being violently protested against by lefties. She's not suddenly having A+ quality papers marked with failing grades. She's not even being kicked out of the club. Just out of the President role.

Seems silly and stupid. But I suspect it's mostly to do with the "joke" that Barron "Doesn't belong there" by the unnamed professor. That IS a censure-worthy comment based on the school's code of conduct. Not termination-worthy, but censure-worthy, for a professor to make about ANY student, and needs to be officially reported. It creates a hostile learning environment for students in general. My guess is she refused to give up the name of the professor. Which would lead them to either believe she made it up, and it was HER comment, OR she was protecting a professor who'd done "the bad thing". Either way, they'd see her as unworthy of of being President of NYU's chapter of their club.

Then again, I could be totally off-base. Hard to say.

I really hope Barron ends up being a based leftist. I see potential in that young man. If he ends up like his older coke-addict brothers I would actually feel sad.

Yeah it's not as extreme of an example. I think a lot of times when people cry "cancel culture" it's roughly the same as this example which is why I posted it. I don't think there was anything wrong with what she said and I don't see a need for repercussions. And again, I don't think it was a joke about saying he doesn't belong. If anything I take it as a cheeky compliment.

I see zero issue with saying Barron is an oddity. I do see an issue with a professor saying a student, ANY student, doesn't belong at a University. Even students who are struggling shouldn't suffer that kind of abuse from professors. But again, the form of censure a prof receives over such a comment is relatively minor. And the end result is they stop with such "jokes".

Again, go back to my first post. I linked to The Hill article where I got it. I would have linked directly to the Vanity Fair article, but I'm not going to give them money to be able to view the article.

This, I think, would be the heart of the issue. Not the oddity, but the professor joking that a student didn't belong at the University.
