Are electric armoured cars a good idea? Genuine question
On the one hand, the high weight of the battery has less impact if the rest of the car is also very heavy. And EVs tend to have better acceleration, which could help when escaping a dangerous situation.
On the other hand, the range of EVs is worse than that of gasoline-based vehicles, as are the recharging/refilling times. And the range issue will be exacerbated by the heavy weight of these specific vehicles.
I'm not sure how the long-term operational costs compare, though. Perhaps the maintenance of EVs is cheaper in the long run.
Depending on this last point, I'm not categorically against picking electric cars for the fleet of armored government vehicles. I am against the obvious cronyism, though. They seem to be backpedaling and will ostensibly hold an open-ended bidding, but we all know that Tesla will get the contract in the end. This is a bad look for the Trump admin.
