Competition is 100% necessary for not only improvement but also maintaining quality
It's one of the defining fundamental principles that has made capitalism the unquestioned success story over socialism. It's the reason why fab makers are now making 2NM nano chips, when only a few years back 4NM was the standard while 10 years ago it was maybe 16/12NM chips and so on. Continual competition drives this.
A lot of government functions have zero competition, imagine after many decades how they've stagnated?
I seen it myself, i worked for DHS for 2 years many years ago. Literally heard my supervisors talking about how we have to spend leftover funds at the end of the year otherwise we would lose it. Those type of interests are not aligned with efficiency. A lot of these places are more focused on self preservation (keeping their own jobs, keeping increasing budget allocations) rather than caring about tax dollars.
