Goalies today vs goalies in other eras…not really comparable. Much larger gear set in today’s age means you need to put the puck in the right spot to score 90% of the time. Gretzy was leagues ahead of his competition. That’s why he was scoring 200+ points sometimes. The guy has more assists than anyone in the leagues history even has points.

Exactly…which makes his goal count that much more impressive. He’s closing in on Gretzky which is quite the feat, in a progressed league.

speaking of leagues ahead of their competition, goalies of gretzky's era pioneered the butterfly and covering posts etc, WAY ahead of their time

Of course…and now, in the years since, almost each goaltender has worked on perfecting those pioneered skills

Say what you want but Ovechkin passes Gretzky and he’s going to hold that record for while. Gretzy won 4 cups, back to back 2 times — damn near 5 seasons in a row. He had a much better team around him his entire career.
Of course he definitely elevated his teammates but they elevated him as well.
Ovechkin basically just had Backstrom for the majority of his career.

Much better teammates? This other dudes been saying everyone back then was trash for the past few pages.

Opinions are opinions. If his other teammates were shit he wouldn’t have more assists than the entirety of the league has points. He wouldnt get assists if his teammates didn’t score and he didn’t get all those goals without having people pass him the puck either.

I think his argument is that goalies back then were not as good which is generally a good argument. I only started watching hockey in the early 2000s but I can see 80s/90s hockey being higher scoring contests. And here is a screenshot of just how many more goals were scored back then as today. Boom, quick google..
