Oh I do agree that we need to re-invest in our industries. Absolutely. But tariffs are a cheap way to compete. Although there is definitely some truth to the fact that the conditions of Mexico specifically when it comes to auto part manufacturing they have an edge and it's the fault of our policies and trade.

American products need higher standards. American jobs need higher standards. We cannot bully our way back into the market.

Tariffs are not about hurting others but forcing foreign producers (many of which are huge corporations like Honda or Toyota or whatever) to bring production internally. If Toyota is looking at 25% tariffs on their cars going to US, then there is a huge incentive to move that factory from wherever in Canada to the US to avoid that tariff.

I grew up in a neighborhood that was once affluent and was essentially built around two Ford and GM plants close together. Back in the 80s and 90s it was considered a 'good' neighborhood. Fast forward to early 2000s and both Ford and GM decided that these US factories aren't that economical and they moved them out of here to a foreign country (including Mexico or Canada). The neighborhood slowly became shit. Eventually all the businesses that could strive as periphery beneficiaries because of those factories that employed thousands died out. The diners, the car shops, even the roads and other infrastructure became shit as it no longer made sense for the city to invest in that part of town to maintain. The people living there, the ones that could, moved out, many never found comparable paying jobs. The neighborhood now is left for dead. There's no businesses there, there's no where to work outside the McDonalds or some other run of the mill AutoZone or Dollar General or whatever other minor employer. My story is basically a copy paste of what has happened across dozens of cities across the rust belt and other parts of the country. Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo, Chicago, many millions impacted.

There is no easy or good way out of this. There's only so many service jobs available. There's only so many finance or IT or medical jobs available. The service economy is very fragile and dependent on consumption. We need to have some manufacturing base that's why Germany, Japan, China all fight for some piece of the manufacturing pie.

Many truly bought into the WSJ propaganda that tells people that all benefit when stuff is made somewhere else for cheap and brought here, but you have to realize who's paying WSJ to say that, and i can promise you it's not people that have your interest in mind but care about profit maximization.

We could continue to be cucked as we import everything and make nothing. They tell you it's the consumer that suffers, what they don't tell you it's also the Honda and Toyota shareholder that benefits from higher margins by producing in lower cost jurisdictions.

Right they are here internally, subject to the same regulations as the rest of the American companies and yet these American companies insist that somehow the regulations imposed on them make it impossible to compete with these international brands.

It's a mixture of corporate greed and Wall Street. The democrats have been the party in favor of Wall Street for a long time and it's part of the reason we are in this mess.

However, these same investors are going to play this game and take advantage of the inevitable market instability. This is my primary point here. I agree that something has to be done, but tariffs are not the answer. At least, tariffs are not the answer alone if we are going to allow private wealth to continue to take the American public hostage.

Let's do a best case scenario if the tariffs do succeed in bringing back jobs and manufacturing into America. It is done on a false pretense. It's not because our business model or ethics are stronger, it's because we cheated the competitor and didn't necessarily make a better product. Does this mean we should somehow bend over to the unfair trade agreements? Of course not.

At this rate we're gonna end up like Russia. A shitty solitude nation with awful products and an ever growing necessity to violently expand and exploit.

Honestly. It’s pathetic. Trade war with your closest ally who has sent troops EVERYWHERE you have over what? Canada is literally our best ally even if their military is small.

This is my prediction. Trump gave China the world. In less than 10 years the US will be ranked out of the top 5 economically. Out of the top 3 militarily.

Look I’m conservative but this move is dumb. Even if they fold in the long run our allies wont trust us.

Yep. I think Trump doesn't realize just how much he is empowering China by ostracizing us from our allies. China will come in. They are outpacing us in everything. Market growth, technological advancement, production, and influence.

I have nothing against the Chinese, or anything, I am just stating the obvious. If we want America first.. we're going the wrong direction.

Oh I do. I very much dislike the Chinese. They have one of the sketchiest technology theft and identity theft issues in the world.

Doesn’t mean I agree with his tarrif plans. I think they will work but it’s not going to be worth the cost.

To be fair, American tech is just as much theft. Look at Bill Gates. The man built his monopoly on the backs of all his competitor's stolen work, whilst simultaneously taking over the global and American market and preventing free trade.

Yeah, I thought he was going to try and get first world trading partners on board with putting heavy tariffs on China and other "developing" trade surplus nations.
This way he's done it could just be a wash with first world trading partners unless he is using that as a bargaining chip because those queers in the EU and Canada said no to the tariff on China, and company idea.
I do think Canada is bloviating about dollar for dollar tariffs as this would greatly harm their country.
The EU are just being scummy europeans though through and through, with their tariffs for thee but not for me approach of rhetoric.
Say Canada shuts off power for customers on the Border in the U.S., all that would do is hasten Trump realizing he can just E.O. over EPA regulations limiting power outputs of Coal and Gas Turbine power plants in the U.S.

Make no mistake the US needs trade partners and our Trade partners in the EU and Americas need our military complex. This is a bad thing all around. My hope is we all come to the table and realize this before China/Russia can make more moves.

So far the EU is saying they will do the opposite because "Orange Man Bad" maybe we will be able to have better trade relations in the future when they are a Muslim Caliphate, and the ZOG boomers cannot get elected anymore here at home, idk.
