I think your last sentence is key: since pulling the troops from Gaza in 2005, Israel had gotten complacent and allowed the Hamas structures inside Gaza to grow and fester too much.
You guys are typically very good at learning from mistakes, though.
Another mistake is how much the propaganda support for the Palestinian cause among their Western allies caught Israel off-guard. The ease with which the Palestinian propaganda was able to frame a campaign against the masterminds of a medieval butchering as a genocidal war of aggression by Israel was really breathtaking.
It’s a campaign the Palestinians are running for years.
I have to give it to them, they spotted the west soft spot for colonialism and are pushing their narrative without changing it one bit. For years.
It’s not that we were off-guard. We weren’t even in the game. All that because Israel politicians. They disgust me really. I can’t think of one politician that represent me in the current government and I find it difficult to find anyone in the opposition as well.
I wish that after this national trauma something better will pop-up. But I afraid we’ll get more of the same.
