Ya avs lost this.
Turns out draisaitl contract made one of edmontons playoff rivals weaker.
Rantenen and draisaitl represented by same agency, figures with the 14-15m price tag

Yeah, that Drai contract was a big deal for us Avs fans knowing Rants was on a contract year.

Really hoping this was just part one of a bigger deal that's in the works (I will live in Sid+Nate delusion land until the deadline.)
More realistically, contract negotiations didn't go well and Landy is probably looking more like a likely return so it was the 'easy' choice to free up cap + get some value to bring back our captain without having to sacrifice our depth to fit under cap. Love our captain, but he hasn't played in three years and sacrificing Rants feels brutal.

I am excited to see Necas/Mackinnon together. Those two have similar speed on bursts, so there is some nasty potential for that line.

But trading off a star for two younger players + picks just feels like the front office took one step forward (via goalie trades/acquisitions) and two steps back in terms of showing the locker room that the FO believes in the team and that they're in 'win now' mode.

Always figured Rants contract was going to be brutal, but figured the Avs would at worse just ride out the rest of his contract the rest of the year, and risk letting him walk, but re-negotiating in the off-season w/ new cap increase knowledge etc.

Super long-term silver lining/copium: At least now, barring a total Avs collapse within the next 2 years, it looks like we'll be able to keep Cale for the rest of his career. Locking up two stars is reasonable, but trying to lock up Mack, Rants, and Makar always seemed tough financially.

necas isnt better than rantanen.

Necas never performs when playoffs comes arround while rantanen has performed
two different style of players

Necas provide a 2nd line center for the avs while they lose their 1st line all star winger in rantanen

not yet, he’s on his way tho ^_^

i dont know, ill be patient with necas. He got solid potential to be a point per game center but also im worried that with weaker wingers like he is getting on colorado
he will be more arround 60-70 points instead of realising his full offensive potential. Unless he gets Powerplay time with mackinnon/makar

as a canes fan the last few years necas has scored so many clutch ass goals, he just peterd off in the playoffs last year or he would be ranat level

give him a season this time next year he will be matching mckinnon just watch. a lot of people liked jack drury also, but hall is kinda injury prone and scrawny as shiet

just a strange trade all around

for the hurricanes they knew necas value was at its best currently and that he is not resigning after his current contract. They saw rantanen as the big missing piece to their offensive puzzle while necas being expendable and that they can put jarvis as a center instead (possibly he was a center in his draft year)
while the avs knew they would pay rantanen the king ransom hes asking for and needed a 2nd line center of his caliber to have a 1-2 punch in mackinnon and necas
hes still on a good deal necas so it extend colorado cup window a little longer before makar and necas get their extension and that it limits them to the quality of players they can get with their salary cap

The real question is if carolina will be able to resign rantanen because if they cant, its a major fuck up by the canes
and if they can at what price

they paid huge for a superstar for the rest of the reason, they will not be able to afford what he’s worth and ranta will land on a trash team next year, that’s basically what i got from it. do or die and they paid a heavy price for that loaner

i do agree with the necas value point tho and he was a dud in playoffs

not the worst on defense but you guys could get better there, thats where im sure with goaltending that the hurricanes need to improve in order to win a cup

if i had to compare to my habs, we still lack offensive depth/firepower, we got a young defensive core that got sky high potential
and 2 goalie prospect who are making me drooling (dobes and fowler)

while i feel that we are fucking up our rebuild by making the playoffs this year or a push for it, i can see why it would do good for the moral of the team seeing a progression but also a setback next year would be harmful on the moral but very helpful in the long run (mckenna as the 1st overall would be the cherry on top but i dont believe we would get it)

while for the oilers its a situation of goaltending being hot dog buns, defense having some good and bads (nurse contract being horrible)
