Yea that was also dropped within the year. Old Pokémon games are the same too..
Fair point about pogo, my bad for poor example. Most modern MMO's do have some restriction to trading/auction house via some form of limited/paid currency and it's not just 1:1 freely trade. Old pokemon games aren't live service so it's kind of a difference landscape. You could argue a point that newer pokemon games have some live service aspects, but the online events require nintendo online sub or pokemon home basic(free)/premium(monthly sub). So they're getting money somehow to keep the service up.
At the end of the day, I don't like the upcoming trading system and restrictions either. I can understand why they'd want to do what they do because it fits into their business model. I wish we could just trade freely as well, but allowing no restriction trading would cause all the whales to stop buying in one fell swoop because they would stop buying entirely and just trade their dupes.
It's one big balancing act trying to get people to spend to pull more packs while trying not to appear too greedy. As of now, i'm sitting comfy as f2p and able to collect all the cards I want, so i'll keep playing. Might do a premium pass here and there though.
On a sidenote, the new consecutive win emblem event went live and I was very surprised how lucky I was this time around. Lost first game then won 5 in a row.
