its never been a talent requirement, its a workhours requirement. immigrants are far more likely to work 80-100 hour weeks which is what Elon wants to slim down employees.
while its evil and wrong its not illogical. in any workforce the things that get lost in communication passing tasks from one person to another stack up quickly.
It's a few different things. Immigrants on these type of visas are essentially locked in to an employer, unless another employer is willing go through the heavy costs associated with sponsorship, which under current framework is not that easy. We recently interviewed a few people that would need these sponsorships and it would be something like 3 months before they are actually hired and tens of thousands of dollars, (mostly lawyer hours) to hire someone that needs sponsorship. It's a no go for a lot of places nowadays, we wanted to hire this Chinese girl that was very smart and frankly extremely overqualified but we didn't because of the sponsorship. For critical positions it makes sense for associates or more jr positions (let's call it 100k and under) not so much.
Employers love these type of employees because 1. they tend to stick around at the company that sponsors them (until at least they get a green card, which takes years), they usually don't rock the boat too much, basically put their head down and are just happy to here, are typically ladder climbers and go above and beyond and 4. it's an awesome way to keep wage inflation down.
I'm not sure how to feel about it. For cream of the cream of the crop people, the top 1% of developers, entrepreneurs, engineers, etc. it makes sense. But in reality, what i think these tech/big corporates bros want is to basically have tens of thousands of these qualified people, many from India, basically be brought and put a pretty big damper on wage growth. My department is like 1/4 Indians, if they lower this barrier significantly, that'll easily climb to 1/3 or maybe 1/2 for industries like finance, tech, engineering, etc. It's great for corporate profits, not so much for the middle class.
