If only all of you all (though some of you may have been) old enough to enjoy EQ up through Scars of Velious. That was the golden age of MMOs IMO. Back when MMOs were difficult, zones were HUGE, leveling took time, and you had to actually work together with others to get past level 10 or so (unless you could kite). No auction house either (EC Tunnel or Gfay vendoring). This forced the community to develop, which doesn't really happen anymore, other than the same couple of people trolling the various chat channels.

WoW and Rift aren't bad games, but MMOs have become so simplified over the past decade. Go to the EQ Allakhazam website and look at some of the 1.0 Epic quests, you'll see how much work was actually required to get a great weapon.

I really like the ignorant kids who claim Rift is a Copy of WoW.

Where did WoW get its base? EQ. Ideas like Instances? Anarchy Online. Opposing Factions? Dark age of Camelot.

Every game, in every genre, takes something from its predecessors.


I've played WoW since vanilla, and it's gotten stale. Is it a bad game? Of course not, it's just old. And for me Cataclysm is not as engaging as TBC or to a lesser extent WotLK was.

Rift is hands down the MOST polished MMO from launch ever, period. If you claim otherwise, you're ignorant and I'm sorry.

But then you look at the primitive crafting system that's identical to Wow's except far worse.

Rift may be polished for a release, but that dosen't make it fun.

How is it "far worse" ? With augments, and a larger variety of crafting combinations plus three trade skills per toon.. I don't see how Rifts crafting is any worse than WoWs.

And Fun is a relative term, people still play everything from EQ to Eve online which I wouldn't spend 10 minutes playing. I find Rift to be engaging, polished, and fun.

Getting epic crafting recipes by grinding dailys with a low rng chance to get a token is not fun polished or engaging.

Its numbing and frustrating.

Fun is a relative term, but nobody thinks that waiting for a rng proc where the chance costs you daily materials is fun.

Honestly WoW has fallen by the wayside not because of its age, but because of its horrible game design for the past 2 expansions. They started out a lot better this expansion from what i've heard but in the end they shoot themselves in the foot. Their game babies their players and gives all players gear.

Rift is not even close to that. Yes crafting you have to grind for plaques, but there are plenty pieces of gear in t1 and t2 experts that are better than those pieces of gear. The reason for that crafting stuff atm, plat. You get to sell it for money because people will pay for them. It's upgrades, but you can do experts to get better gear. My guild is number 98 in the world which doesn't include the two bosses we have already downed. The content isn't as easy as people say it is. People don't like rift because when you get to 50 there is no one holding your hand handing out free epics. In blues and greens, some of the t1's are hard, and the transition from t1 to t2 isn't easy either. People just aren't used to actually having to WORK for their gear so they wine and complain that the game is bad and they go back to wow for their free epics. We had 3 people leave the guild yesterday because they couldn't sit for a raid, 2 of them in full blue sets not even close to geared out for the actual raid.

People have a horrid concept of what MMO's are now-a-days and they just want their free loot!
