I'm 37 atm, playing casually and still very much enjoying the game.

I rolled a mage, Warlock/Elementalist/Chloromancer - ridiculous AoE pulling capabilities with great survivability.

I recommend you do a pure DPS spec from 1-20ish, then get a second role for heals or tanking depending on what you make.

roll a mage and go for necromancer/warlock to lvl, u are nearly immortal at lvling and can pull easily 5-6 mobs and still leaving the fight with full life and mana.
dot dot dot dot, loot the first mobs which dying and continue. kinda funny to stay 2 hours infight and still mining and loot creeps while ur dots and pet kill them.
