not to be a dick but if you can't even self motivate to find these answers yourself either via the web or trial and error you will never enjoy using a metal detector anyways.

I have been detecting for 5 or so years. If you have any questions please let me know.

The best thing you can do to start off is:

1. Go to youtube, type in your detector model, and watch other people use it. maybe even tutorials
2. Don't enter any private property
3. Get in the habit of detecting with knee pads and rubber coated gloves. Its much easier now than months from now, trust me.

national parks are super NOT OK. they have special restrictions because many date back to a historical time and contain sites and buildings that have historical value. Most, if not all, have legal restrictions and you're likely looking at more than a "please leave", more likely an arrest and/or confiscation. State parks are often the same.

County parks and city parks however are generally fair game unless they city or county's website explicitly prohibits metal detecting and/or digging of any kind.

I would start by doing a bit of research on the parks in your area, both to see if its legal to hunt there and also to check how old they may be. type in "historic mapworks" on google and you'll find a website with centuries of historical maps to help you date the parks.

Also google "friendly metal detecting forum", its a wonderful community.
