The notations for numerals have changed over time, just as letters have. If you see the alphabet over the years its had minor alterations as well, slightly different ways to draw letters.
The most common example of this is the number 7, which some people write with a horizontal slash half way up the number. or the different ways people write 2, with a sharp corner or a loop.
You'll notice that all of the different representations however have been 0-9, aka a base 10 system. If you want to have a mind blow experience look up some info on the mayan base 20 system, now thats some crazy shit from a modern perspective!
