"Astronomers discovered a massive black hole 200 million light years away. It’s called NGC 1600 and is 17 billion times larger than the sun.
Despite its huge size, it’s still not the largest black hole ever discovered by scientists.
The largest one is 21 billion times larger than the sun. Such huge black holes weigh 10 billion suns and are usually found in densely populated areas.
According to the MASSIVE Survey, which studies large galaxies, NGC 1600 is discovered in a region with only 20 galaxies. As the NASA experts say it’s like finding a skyscraper in a tiny town. Scientists determined the size of the black hole by measuring the stars’ movement within its influence.
They used the Gemini Observatory telescopes in Chile and Hawaii. Lead astronomer Chung-Pei Ma explained that the stars were moving extremely fast and the only explanation for that is if they are influenced by a region with “a 17-billion-solar-mass black hole at the center.”
One explanation for the huge size of the black hole is that it was created by 2 black holes, which merged together after their galaxies were smashed one with the other. The latest discovery scientifically proves that huge black holes can also exist in smaller galaxies, too."
