Well this sub is a nature forum but we rarely see anything but physics and sci fi talked about.

Sad story for anyone interested, asian black market is putting these porpoise on the brink of extinction. Some estimates put 30 as the number left. Posing an interesting question. should the remaining 30 be taken into domestication to try and bolster the numbers? Or do you leave it alone and hope they can bounce back in the wild with protection?

Either way it looks like another animal is on the very edge of non-existence.

While it is sad that another species may disappear, species die out all the time without human intervention, so it's nothing strange, we just speed it up, we eventually will go extinct as well

It's just life

I agree, i just find it sad that an entire species is extinct because of the blackmarket price of their organs, which are supposed to have all sorts of magical qualities that are all hogwash. An entire species wiped off the earth to essentially produce snake oil...

Have you seen the newest Marineland commercial talking about how they're going to end Killer whale shows but then they sort of ironical insult people who care about large sea mammals.
Their attitude really shows how the root of the problem is Money and their need to wrap themselves in it.

had to triple take on Marineland lol

Ya i've seen those commercials, gag me... Reminds me of the post-gulf oil spill BP commercials that South Park roasted ala "We're sorry..."

Its been a farce from he get go, orcas and other animals are super similar in intelligence and training to elephants. Anyone who knows the history of elephant training knows how cruel circus training is for elephants. The only real difference is that in a water tank orcas cant be chained and beaten for compliance so restriction of swimming space and even starving have been used for classical conditioning. Then a trainer gets drowned and they act shocked, just like Barnahm and Bailey's shrug when an elephant goes on a rampage.

If we are the direct cause for a species being on the verge of extinction then its our responsibility to preserve the species. Makes me sick how govts/people choose to turn there heads and not care we as a species need to clean up our mess and take responsibility for turning this world into a dump.

Sadly this case is a bit "unsolvable". The chinese govt has tried to take a stronger hand on the poaching takes place in international waters and obviously illegal animal parts arent being checked in customs.

I fear this animal is 100% gone unless taken under the wing of scientists and preserved in captivity. Even then tho the question remains, how low does the population need to get before we domesticate them all? And will that kill the species as a result, not all animals will reproduce when taken into domestication sadly.

I agree, makes me sick as well.
