This has probably been said before but I am totally curious how close and if it is possible to create a virtual reality. I'm sure it is we are just getting closer and closer to the technology needed to achieve this. People will always disagree but if you look at it, it really isn't impossible. I give it 10-15 years myself until something comes out close to SAO. Just looking for thoughts on this not looking for negative things towards this people play games to escape reality as it is now so why not bring it one step further.

until we get a voting populace that isn't terrified of human experimentation we won't see anything of that scale.

any sort of real feeling simulated environment would require messing with your brain and thats generally where people stop listening to your idea.

if you pay me millions of dollars to be a lab mouse and experiment this technology then I would agree...
I mean people work at dangerous jobs all the time... hazardous materials would scare the shit out of me, more than some scientist measuring my brainwaves...

also once the virtual world exists... I mean... wouldnt that kinda save humanity from overpopulation? you could have millions of people seated around eachother each hooked into a machine and be fed through tubes, wait wait wait..... thats the Matrix..... BWAHAHHAHA

It depends how close to reality you want it to feel. The technology is out there, but who is going to buy it? its probably expensive.

if we could create a virtual reality as similar as in The Matrix, within say 100 years, it could be argued that it has already been done before

I develop virtual reality software, but for the foreseeable future it will only involve a headset like an oculus rift and an input device. Full scale brain manipulation for full immersion is much more than ten to fifteen years away.

Then again, we already live in a virtual reality.
