"Planet" is just a word to describe a certain type of object in space. More specifically, it is the International Astronomical Union (IAU) that decides what the criteria is for an object to be considered a "planet". Telescope advances in the last couple decades have lead to a much more detailed view of the of the solar system. This lead to the discovery of many more far away Pluto-like objects orbiting the sun, and this caused astronomers to question what constitutes a planet. The IAU formed a committee and laid out a criteria for what the word "planet" defines. In 2006, The IAU voted and as a result Pluto is now classified as a "dwarf planet". You can read what the IAU has to say about it: http://www.iau.org/public/themes/pluto/

^ tl;dr "planet" acts as an arbitrary criteria describing a relatively large object orbiting a star.

It's more specific than that
