It is impossible to "destroy" a planet or it's environment with our current technology. All we can do is move resources from one part of a planet to another part of the same planet.
Why does it matter if we make other species go extinct? We are the epitome of successful evolution, and thus the superior of all other species.
How about because the integrity of eco systems is just as important for our benefit as it is of other species? Our endless squandering of resources and lack of sustainability is putting a lot at risk, of course you have the climate argument as well but that is a whole other subject.
There would be likely no hurry to explore space if we could manage what we have here, which by all accounts is an exceptional landscape beyond belief, given how hard it likely is to find anything even closely similar in the universe.
How far is the technology away, for deep space travel, do we think? Few hundred years?
By the way what does us from a scientific perspective suppose to mean? Who is caring exactly? We need to preserve ourselves for science?
