its the thought that counts. if it opens the mind of just a single person, its worth it. Sagan was a popularizer and communicator of science in a way that a child or otherwise ignorant person could understand it. i haven't seen any of the new series but if its anything like sagan's, its not meant to be very interesting to people that are already informed on the subject, but rather its to open the door to people that have been living under rocks. if nothing else it will plant the seed of curiosity. any publicity is good publicity at this point.

Yup, agreed. The show is for the general public and we can all agree that the general public is pretty dumb/ignorant

I completely understand that it is a show for the general public, but I just feel 90% of it is cartoons.
Idk about you guys, but when I think of cosmos I think of stars, galaxies, nebullas, etc. I don't think of a history lesson about Isaac Newton in cartoon mode.

It was basically exactly what i expected. If it catered to people that already had a big interest in science then it would not be able to stay on the air. Shows need viewers to stay on the air and lets be real there wouldnt be enough people watching a real in depth science show on tv to keep it afloat. For its purpose it is doing just fine.

If you haven't seen the Carl Sagan cosmos, you need to. It's old - duh. It is still so fascinating the things he talks about. He is very calm, articulate and laid back when explaining what the universe is made of and how it works. I learned a lot from the old show and watched the whole series twice in a few weeks. The new one just seems like any other science documentary about random mumbo jumbo while Neil deGrasse Tyson stands in a "spaceship" looking serious. I wasn't drawn into the new one like I was to the old one.

Edit- my snapping turtle eating worms to the original cosmos theme

Neil Tyson is always either animated and exuberant or serious and stiff. There really isn't much calmness or laid back in Tyson. Tyson is a brilliant man but hes probably better suited in a university classroom giving lectures to adults. Sagan and Tyson are two very different people on many levels. Tyson just isn't the warm fuzzy type. Tyson is normally a fast talker and his brain seems to be bursting at the seams with thoughts.

Carl Sagan really was one of a kind. He definitely had a calmness and charm about him that captivated people. Sagan was patient, poetic, warm, courageous, inspiring, and tantalized the imagination. I dearly miss Sagan and the world really needs more people like him.

Tyson is very warm and fuzzy, and Cosmos is a fine show. Although I've only seen the first two episodes, I found both entertaining and educational.
